namal uyana
Namal uyana, bearing south east Asia's largest rose pink quartz mountain range steeped in richlegend, is
situated about 159km north of Colombo in the slepy helmet of Ulpathgama, Galkiriyagama, in the Anuradhapura District.
According to folklore, Moghul Emperor Shah jehan had used pink quartz mined from this unique range, to build the world famous monument Taj Mahal.
Today, this proud national heritage with ruins of an ancient vihara and rock enclaves has been declared an Archaeological reserve by the Government, thanks to the tireless
efforts of ven. vanavasi Rahul Thero who made it his abode for meditation, some thirteen years ago. Namal uyana boasts of a countless number of Na trees as well as other valuable tress like ebony, teak, satinwood, margosa, milla and panakka. The long and arduous trek
to the rose Quartz Range winds through a shady landscape of green that looks ethereal during the flowering season.
The formation of Na trees points to the fact that it had truly been a park in ancienttimes. Namal Uyana, so rich in ancient heritage and bio diversity is worth a visit by all nature lovers, to enjoy its unsurpassed tranquil beauty. It could be reached by traveling upto Madatugama through Rangiri Dambulla on the Anuradhapura road.
